ABOUT THE BOOK

To make a new life, she'll have to learn how to breathe again...

By the time Dominic and Moira St. Clair get their ailing sister, Odessa, to Colorado Springs in the winter of 1883, she is nearly dead. Odessa has been seriously aling for the past year from consumption, an illness that claimed the lives of four of her younger brothers, prompting her father, to send his only surviving children west to chase the cure.

Moira is beautiful and dangerously headstrong; and pugnacious Dominic is charged with establishing a new arm of the family business--a business he doesn't want.
Several days after her arrival, Odessa witnesses what she fears is the murder of miner Sam O’Toole, friend and neighbor to the charming Bryce McAllan.

What’s more, Sam leaves her a poem containing clues that seem to direct her to his mine, which is purported to carry a fantastic vein of silver. But if she is ever to rise from her bed again, she must first concentrate on conquering the giant that threatens her─consumption. Indeed, she must learn to breathe again─daring to embrace her life, her future, and hope in her God.

My Review:

I hope I never take a single breath for granted again. This book is about breathing literally and figuratively.

Odessa St. Clair has to move out to the Colorado in 1883 to try and recover from consumption. Her father stays behind to run St. Clair Printing Company and sends her brother Nic and sister Moira with her. They are the only children left. The family seems plagued with consumption. Over the years four brothers and the mother has died from it.

Nic and Moira feel deeply their father's high expectations for them. Nic does not know what he wants to do only not running a bookshop or printing company. Moira is a great actress but her father has forbidden her from doing it. She is also very beautiful. The book follows all of them but the main plot line revolves around Odessa.

Odessa is at the sanatorium in her room one night and hears a noise from the other room. She is sure Sam is murdered. Another resident is Bryce McAllan who is Sam's neighbor and good friend. Bryce and Odessa feel something from the first time they meet on the porch at the sanatorium. There are many suspense points in the plot line. Everything flows good. It is a 400 hundred page book so I won't tell you everything.

I enjoyed the amount of detail the author put in the book to make it feel authentic. The descriptions of the setting etc. were wonderful. I was swept away to Colorado. I am very happy this is the first book in a trilogy because I am looking forward to Nic and Moira's story. I highly recommend this historical. :)
