A Reluctant Courtship by Laurie Alice Eakes (Review)

  • Series: The Daughters of Bainbridge House (Book 3)
  • Paperback: 368 pages

  • Publisher: Revell (October 15, 2013)

  • ISBN-13: 978-0800734688

  • Honore Bainbridge has been courted by two men, one of whom turned out to be a traitor, the other a murderer. Banished to her family's country estate, where she will hopefully stay out of trouble, she finally meets the man she is sure is exactly right for her: Lord Ashmoor. Tall, dark, and handsome--what more could a girl ask for? But he too is under suspicion because of his American upbringing and accusations that he has helped French and American prisoners escape from Dartmoor Prison. For his part, Lord Ashmoor needs a wife beyond reproach, which Honore certainly is not. Amid a political climate that is far from friendly, Honore determines to help Ashmoor prove his innocence--if she can do so and stay alive.

From the rocky cliffs of Devonshire, England, comes the exciting conclusion to the lush Daughters of Bainbridge House series. Award-winning author Laurie Alice Eakes thrusts her readers into high drama from the very first sentence and keeps them on their toes until the final page.

    My Review:

I loved this book. It is the third in the Daughters of Bainbridge House series and can stand alone. Honore's character and reputation might not make as much sense without the background found in the first two though. The first two books were good and had each of her sisters as the main character. In this book Honore is at the family estate with her hired companion, a distant relation of one of her brother in laws. They get along fine but Honore still feels the snubs of her peers. Lord Ashmoor comes along and they are attracted to each other but both have reservations. His are stronger though. His father left England with scandal and it has not been solved so he is trying to salvage the family reputation. He needs a wife that is high class and above reproach. They band together to solve the mystery of the missing prisoners and his father's crime. The plot and characters were interesting and unique. The regency time period in England is one of my favorites. Highly Recommended. :)

A Flight of Fancy by Laurie Alice Eakes (Review)

  • Her head is in the clouds. His feet are planted firmly on the ground. Can love cover the distance?
Cassandra Bainbridge may be a bit of a bluestocking, but when Geoffrey Giles is near, love seems a fine alternative to passion for Greek and the physics of flight. With his dashing good looks and undying devotion to her, the earl of Whittaker sets Cassandra's heart racing with his very presence. It seems his only flaw is his distaste for ballooning, the obsession that consumes so much of her thoughts.

When a terrible accident compels her to end her betrothal, Cassandra heads for the country to recover from both her injuries and her broken heart. With time on her hands and good friends to help her, she pursues her love for ballooning and envisions a future for herself as a daring aeronaut. But when Lord Whittaker slips back into her life, will she have to choose between him and her dream?

    My Review:
I enjoyed reading this Christian historical fiction book. It is the second in the Daughters of Bainbridge series. They are set in the Regency period of England which I love. The author does a good job with details/descriptions without it being overwhelming. The main characters the focus is on in this story is Cassandra the middle daughter and her beau Geoffrey Giles. Cassandra is obessesed with hot air balloning and he definately does not approve. There is a lot of back and forth between the two of them throughout the book. The subplot involves who is trying to kill Geoffrey. So the book has mystery, romance, and a little suspense. I can't wait to read the last book in the series. Recommended.

  • From the back cover:

When young widow Lady Lydia Gale helps a French prisoner obtain parole, she never dreamed he would turn up in her parlor. But just as the London Season is getting under way, there he is, along with a few other questionable personages. While she should be focused on helping her headstrong younger sister prepare for her entré into London society, Lady Gale finds herself preoccupied with the mysterious Frenchman. Is he a spy or a suitor? Can she trust him? Or is she putting her family in danger?

Readers will enjoy being drawn into this world of elegance and intrigue, balls and masquerades. Author Laurie Alice Eakes whisks readers through the drawing rooms of London amid the sound of rustling gowns on this exciting quest to let the past stay in the past and let love guide the future.

    My Review:

I thought this was an overall okay Christian Regency book. It did not have enough details and development especially the mystery element. I am still confused on what actually happened.  The romance part was good. I liked Lady Lydia and her sisters. I will read the next book in the series to see what happens to them. It is an interesting start to a new series and new to me author. :)
