Rescue Me by Susan May Warren (Review)

  • Series: Montana Rescue (Book 2)
  • Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Revell (January 31, 2017)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0800727444
  • ISBN-13: 978-0800727444

  • When Deputy Sam Brooks commits to something, nothing can sway him--not just on the job as liaison between the Mercy Falls sheriff's department and PEAK Rescue, but in his private life. He's the one who stuck around to take care of his mother after his father's accidental death. And he's the one--perhaps the only one--who believes Sierra Rose is the perfect girl for him. Safe, practical, and organized, she's nothing like her hippie, impulsive, bleeding heart sister, Willow.

Willow, however, has been in love with Sam Brooks for as long as she can remember. But she wants her sister to have a happy ending. Besides, Willow has other things to focus on--namely, nabbing the job as youth pastor for her small-town church. Best thing for her to do is to purge Sam from her heart.

Neither can predict the events that will bring them together in a fight for their lives in the forbidding wilderness of Glacier National Park. Stranded, injured, and with the winter weather closing in, Sam and Willow will have to work together to save a crew of terrified teenagers. As they fight to survive, they might just discover a new hope for love.

    My Review:

This book was great. I really enjoyed reading it. It is book two in the Montana Rescue series. I think they should be read in order as the characters repeat. The main focus in this story is Sam and Willow. The sparks fly between them after Willow kisses him in a moment of weakness. But there are multiple hurdles. Sam is the boyfriend of Willow's sister Sierra. And he thinks he does not like what makes her Willow. She is the opposite of her sister which he thinks is perfect for him. Willow has loved him for years but puts her sister first. There are multiple subplots featuring the other members of Peak rescue. Some run throughout the series. It did not distract from the book for me. The action really heats up when Sam, Willow, the youth pastor, and a group of teenagers go hiking. On the way home they are in a bad van accident. A winter weather storm furthers complicates it. Sam and Willow have to work together to get everyone out safely. The plot and characters were well developed and held my attention from the beginning to end. Recommended.

  • Series: Montana Rescue (Book 1)
  • Paperback: 352 pages
  • Publisher: Revell (October 18, 2016)

  • Search and rescue pilot Kacey Fairing is home on leave in Mercy Falls, Montana, twelve years after she joined the military to escape the mistakes of her past. With a job waiting for her as the new lead pilot of Peak Rescue in Glacier National Park, Kacey hopes to reconnect with the now-teenage daughter she sees only between deployments. What she doesn't realize is that someone else is also back in town.

Ben King has been building his country music career since the day Kacey shut him out of her life. Now all of that's on hold when his injured father calls him home to help run Peak Rescue until he's fully recovered. It doesn't take long, though, to discover his father's ulterior motives as Kacey Fairing walks into the house and back into his heart.

With Mercy Falls in a state of emergency due to flash floods, Kacey and Ben are forced to work together to save lives. But when floodwaters turn personal, can they put aside the past to save their future?

    My Review:

This was a good Christian romance book. It is the first book in a new series called Montana Rescue. The series is set in Mercy Falls, Montana. There are actually two romance stories going on in this book. The main one is between Kacey and Ben. They were teen sweethearts that made a common error and ended up with a baby. Due to a misunderstanding Ben does not know he has a baby. The baby is now a teenager herself. Things are complicated by the fact Ben did go on to be a Country music star. Kacey joined the military but is on home on leave after being injured. She already has issues with her daughter from being gone so much. Ben's dad runs a rescue service and calls him home to help after he is seriously hurt. But is his dad also playing matchmaker? The plot and characters were well developed and held my attention from the beginning. The romance was believable and sparks flew between Kacey and Ben. The setting was interesting. The second romance in the background was between Sierra and her boss Ian. Apparently there was a prequel online book and they were in it. The plot line for them will continue on into the next book. This was a good start to the new series and I can't wait to read the next book. Susan May Warren is one of my favorite authors.

The Wonder of You by Susan May Warren (Review)

  • Series: Christiansen Family
  • Paperback: 416 pages
  • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (June 18, 2015)
  • ISBN-13: 978-1414378459

  • Mortified after her semester abroad is cut short, Amelia Christiansen returns to Deep Haven, certain she isn’t brave enough for the adventures she’s dreamed of. The last thing she expects is for the man who broke her heart to cross the Atlantic and beg forgiveness.

Heir to a European hotel dynasty, Roark St. John has trekked from one exotic locale to another, haunted by tragedy and the expectations that accompany his last name. Amelia is the first woman to give him a reason to stop running. He’ll do anything for a second chance—even contend with Amelia’s old flame, who is intent on sending Roark packing.

While one surprise after another leaves Amelia reeling, Roark’s continued presence only highlights the questions pursuing her. Like him, is she running from the life God has called her to? Could finding her new place mean leaving home behind?

    My Review:

I enjoyed reading this latest book about the Christiansen family. The Christiansen Family series has all been good. This book focuses on Amelia, the youngest daughter. The other family members are present and we continue to learn more about their stories in each book. It can stand alone but is better if read in order. Amelia is the baby and acts like it. She went overseas for a semester abroad but goes home because she had her heart broken. Back home she has her high school sweetheart, Seth, who still wants her. Roark the guy she fell in love in Europe comes to America to win her back. Unknown to her and most everyone else he is heir to a really large hotel company. I love the setting, Deep Haven, and the other characters. The book was well written and engaging. There were humorous moments too. Recommended.

Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, I learned to love city life, although I'm a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I'm an adventurer -- having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia Russia as a missionary for eight years. Probably that's why my characters can't sit still, and seem to get into one scrape after another -- they're too much like me! Hook, Line & Sinker by Susan May Warren Grad student Abigail Cushman has agreed to enter the annual Deep Haven fishing contest. She’s a quick learner, even if she doesn’t know the difference between a bass and a trout. But nothing could prepare her for competing against the handsome charmer she’s tried to forget since grief tore them apart.

One chance for each woman to change her life . . . but will love be the real prize?

    My Review:

I enjoyed reading this collection of three novellas. These are some of my favorite authors so I knew I had to read this book. My favorite of the three is The Recipe by Candace Calvert. My least favorite is For Love of Money. They are pure Christian romance stories. The faith element is present and well done. I am not a big fan of novellas because I feel like more plot development is always needed. I was okay with these stories. Recommended to fans of the genre.

Evergreen by Susan May Warren (Review)

    • Series: Christiansen Family
    • Hardcover: 208 pages
    • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (September 1, 2014)
    • ISBN-13: 978-1414394015

An empty nest has Ingrid Christiansen dreading the upcoming holidays, but her husband, John, couldn’t be more excited about this new season of life. He even has a surprise trip abroad planned. He’s sure she’ll love it. What’s more romantic than Christmas in Paris?

Before he can stop her, however, Ingrid agrees to spearhead a major church project. Then their faithful dog, Butterscotch, needs emergency surgery, draining their savings. And then—because disasters strike in threes—an unexpected guest arrives, dredging up old hurts.

As a beautiful blanket of snow transforms the north woods into a winter wonderland, a deep chill settles over John and Ingrid’s marriage. With the holidays fast approaching, their only hope of keeping their love evergreen depends on turning the page on the past and embracing a new chapter of their future.

     My Review:

I thought this was a good novella. It is part of the Christiansen series. It's the holidays and John and Ingrid are dealing with empty nest syndrome. Ingrid is especially taking it hard. Then the family dog gets sick and her nephew from her estranged sister shows up needing a home. Their marriage is strained and they feel disconnected. It will take a Christmas miracle to turn things around. The ending is sweet and satisfying. This will be a great addition to Christmas novellas. I have liked the entire series. Recommended.

When I Fall In Love by Susan May Warren (Review)

    • Series: Christiansen Family
    • Paperback: 400 pages
    • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (July 1, 2014)
    • ISBN-13: 978-1414378435

Hawaii was the last place Grace Christiansen ever imagined she’d vacation, much less fall in love. But when her family surprises her with a cooking retreat in paradise, she is pulled—or maybe yanked—away from her predictable, safe life and thrown headfirst into the adventure of a lifetime.

Max Sharpe may make his living on the ice as a pro hockey player, but he feels most at home in the kitchen. Which is why he lives for the three-week culinary vacation he takes each year in Hawaii. Upon being paired with Grace for a cooking competition, Max finds himself drawn to her passion, confidence, and perseverance. But just when Grace dares to dream of a future beyond her hometown, Max pulls away.

Wrestling with personal demons, Max fights against opening his heart to a love he knows he should never hope for. And as his secrets unfold, Grace is torn between the safe path in front of her and what her heart truly desires. If love means sacrificing her ideal happily ever after, Grace’s faith will face its toughest test yet.

     My Review:

I loved this book. This is the third book in the Christiansen Family series. The characters are the same but the main focus in this story is Grace Christiansen. Grace is a great character I can identify with on being scared and letting it prevent you from growth. Max Sharpe played hockey with her brother Owen but Grace never really knew him until her family surprises her with a trip to Hawaii for a cooking vacation. Max and Grace both love to cook. Some of the family asks him to look after her but he is hesitant because it is his only chance to relax and chill. He is not looking for love or a relationship due to other reasons too. They meet up and sparks fly. The plot and characters are unique, interesting, and well written. It held my attention from the beginning. The conclusion is satisfying and sets up the next book. I have fallen in love with this series. I can't wait for the next book in the series. It is a great Christian contemporary romance series. Highly Recommended.

It Had to Be You by Susan May Warren (Review)

    • Series: Christiansen Family
    • Paperback: 480 pages
    • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (January 17, 2014)
    • Language: English
    • ISBN-10: 1414378424
    • ISBN-13: 978-1414378428

Eden Christiansen never imagined her role as her younger brother Owen’s cheerleader would keep her on the sidelines of her own life. Sure, it feels good to be needed, but looking after the reckless NHL rookie leaves little time for Eden to focus on her own career. She dreamed of making a name for herself as a reporter, but is stuck writing obits—and starting to fear she doesn’t have the chops to land a major story. If only someone would step up to mentor Owen . . . but she knows better than to expect help from team veteran and bad-boy enforcer Jace Jacobsen.

Jace has built his career on the infamous reputation of his aggressive behavior—on and off the ice. Now at a crossroads about his future in hockey, that reputation has him trapped. And the guilt-trip he’s getting from Eden Christiansen isn’t making things any easier. But when Owen’s carelessness leads to a career-threatening injury and Eden stumbles upon a story that could be her big break, she and Jace are thrown together . . . and begin to wonder if they belong on the same team after all.

    My Review:

I loved this latest book in the Christiansen family series. It can be read on its own but the whole series is good. Jace is the perfect hunky hero with the right amount of bad boy fallibility. Eden is a great heroine. She is stronger and smarter than she realizes. She thinks it is her life to take care of her siblings especially her brother Owen. Jace and Owen play professional hockey together. The author does a good job with just enough hockey details. The characters and the plot were well developed and unique. It held my attention from the beginning. The sparks fly between Jace and Eden in an appropriate way. Jace and Owen are not perfect. There is some alcohol and fighting in the book. It is not prominent it just adds to the realness of the characters. The conclusion is satisfying and sigh worthy. This was another great Susan May Warren love story. Highly Recommended. :)

Take a Chance on Me by Susan May Warren (Review)

  • Paperback: 416 pages

  • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers (March 22, 2013)

  • ISBN-13: 978-1414378411

  • Darek Christiansen is almost a dream bachelor—oldest son in the large Christiansen clan, heir to their historic Evergreen Lake Resort, and doting father. But he’s also wounded and angry since the tragic death of his wife, Felicity. No woman in Deep Haven dares come near.

New assistant county attorney Ivy Madison simply doesn’t know any better when she bids on Darek at the charity auction. Nor does she know that when she crafted a plea bargain three years ago to keep Jensen Atwood out of jail and in Deep Haven fulfilling community service, she was releasing the man responsible for Felicity’s death. All Ivy knows is that the Christiansens feel like the family she’s always longed for. And once she gets past Darek’s tough exterior, she finds a man she could spend the rest of her life with. Which scares her almost as much as Darek learning of her involvement in his wife’s case.

Caught between new love and old grudges, Darek must decide if he can set aside the past for a future with Ivy—a future more and more at risk as an approaching wildfire threatens to wipe out the Christiansen resort and Deep Haven itself.

    My Review:

I enjoyed reading this latest Deep Haven book. The plot and characters were interesting and well developed. I loved how Ivy and Darek interact together and how the relationship develops over the course of the book. Ivy was a foster child and longs for a place to call home. She falls in love with the tiny town of Deep Haven. She meets Darek when she goes to a town gathering that had a bachelor auction. She feels sorry for him because nobody bids on him. She did not know that she bought the town crusty old widower or his wife was killed by the man she got a plea bargain for. There are some great minor characters too and town favorites make a reappearance. This book can be read alone without being confused. This author always does a great job of making you feel like you are really there. The characters come off the page. The plot holds your attention. I felt the emotions and angst of the characters. The author creates a picture with words especially with the setting. The plot was detailed with some surprises. It is a contemporary Christian romance book but not cheesy. The conclusion was satisfying. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Recommended.

The north woods easily became the foundation for her first series, The Deep Haven series, based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. Her first full-length book, Happily Ever After, became a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

As an award winning author, Susan returned home in 2004, to her native Minnesota after serving for eight years with her husband and four children as missionaries with SEND International in Far East Russia. She now writes full time from Minnesota's north woods and the beautiful town that she always dreamed of living in.

    ABOUT THE BOOK

PJ Sugar knows three things for sure:

    1) After traveling the country for ten years hoping to shake free from the trail of disaster that's become her life, she needs a fresh start.

    2) The last person she wants to see when she heads home for her sister's wedding is Boone-her former flame and the reason she left town.

    3) Her best friend's husband absolutely did not commit the first murder Kellogg, Minnesota, has seen in more than a decade.

What PJ doesn't know is that when she starts digging for evidence, she'll uncover much more than she bargained for-a deadly conspiracy, a knack for investigation, and maybe, just maybe, that fresh start she's been longing for.

It's not fair to say that trouble happens every time PJ Sugar is around, but it feels that way when she returns to her home town, looking for a fresh start. Within a week, her former teacher is murdered and her best friend's husband is arrested as the number-one suspect. Although the police detective investigating the murder—who also happens to be PJ's former flame—is convinced it's an open-and-shut case, PJ's not so sure. She begins digging for clues in an effort to clear her friend’s husband and ends up reigniting old passions, uncovering an international conspiracy, and solving a murder along the way. She also discovers that maybe God can use a woman who never seems to get it right

My Review: I love Susan May Warren. She is one of my absolute favorite authors. The book we are touring today was originally published in 2004 and I thought it sounded familiar but I was not positive I have read it. Well I have but I am rereading it because I love her books. It is book three in the Deep Haven series. There are few minor details that would require reading the previous two in order. I recommend the whole series. :)

My Review: I loved this book. It is third and last in the Noble family trilogy. First is Nick's story then Rafe's and last but not least Stephanie. Her story has romance, some suspense, and a little intrigue. Stephanie has always held down the fort and it leaves her wondering if she has missed something. Also enter Linc Cash movie star who has come back to build on a ranch he just bought to find it in flames when he arrives. The guilty party is a family of three only one of them an adult. This family is on the run and Stephanie takes up for them and brings them to live at her house on the Noble Ranch. Linc is back for more than one reason including health problems. Linc had one conversation with Stephanie last summer but still remembers it and was hoping to kindle a romance with her but he finds out people are not always who you expect them to be and do what you expect them do. Susan May Warren does a great job of weaving subplots through the main story. I did not want to put this book down. It is a great end to the Noble family trilogy. I highly recommend it and the whole trilogy. :)

***Leave a comment to be entered to win a copy. Deadline is Monday July 14 at midnight.***

    About Wiser Than Serpents:
When her sister vanishes into a human slave ring, FSB agent Yanna Andrevka is determined to rescue her. Unfortunately, she's in over her head, with no way out, especially after destroying the undercover operation of Delta Force Operative David Curtiss, who is deep undercover in the Twin Serpents crime syndicate. David has his hands full trying to save Yana, and his operation -- one that could rescue hundreds of women from the Serpent, or cost he and Yanna their lives. The thrilling next chapter of the Mission: Russia series!

My Review: I loved this book . It is the third in a series that I have highly anticipated each and every book. I highly recommend the whole series. It is possible to read the third without feeling too lost but I recommend reading them in order so the details about the other characters that come out make perfect sense. From the beginning I was pulled in and I did not want to quit reading until the end. I loved finding out more about the lives of other past major characters and coming to love and find out more about the main characters in this book. The characters and plot are interesting and unique. Don't miss out on this great suspense with a touch of romance book and series!

    A Note From Susan:

Did you know that there are 27 million people around the globe held as slaves today – more than 80% of them women and children, and up to 50% minors. In fact, there are MORE slaves today than were in the time of William Wilberforce. That leaves me horrified, and it was those stats that compelled me to write a story with a human trafficking plotline.
Wiser than Serpents is a continuation of the Mission:Russia series, a thriller about Yanna, whose sister is snatched through a Russian dating service, and disappears. Yanna enlists the help of Delta Force Captain, David Curtiss to find and rescue her. Readers who’ve read, In Sheep’s Clothing and Sands of Time will recognize Yanna as the tech expert, and David as the solid Christian of the group. (Read the 5-Rose Review here!)
The book is written from the point of views of the rescuers, not the victims, and offers hope and empowerment, instead of feelings of helplessness. It raises awareness without lowering the standards of Christian fiction.

However, the world is real, and the need to get involved is great. I so greatly admire people who take their beliefs and put action to them –hence why a portion of the proceeds of Wiser than Serpents is going to help the International Justice Mission, (http://www.ijm.org/), an organization dedicated to rescuing victims and fighting the scourge of slavery.

"Taming Rafe" by Susan May Warren

    From the back cover:
Two-time world champion bull rider Rafe Noble had no idea how quickly his world could end.In less than eight seconds, he lost his title, his career, and his best friend all on the dirt floor of a noisy rodeo arena. Katherine Breckenridge just wants to make a difference by running her mothers charity foundation. But the mysterious disappearance of half a million dollars has forced it to the brink of bankruptcy. Her last chance to save it is the annual fund-raiser, an event thats destroyed by an out-of-control Rafe Noble. Desperate to rescue the foundation, Katherine heads to the Noble family ranch to enlist Rafes help in raising the money he cost her in lost donations. What she doesnt know is that Rafe is broke in cash and in spirit and that helping her could end up costing him his life.

My Review: I loved this book. Susan May Warren is one of my favorite authors. I think this may be my favorite so far. :) Rafe is a hero in distress. His life is on the rocks and he is not making good decisions. He makes a big mistake and his family takes him to Montana. I love all the subplots in the bigger one of Rafe's story. I highly recommend this book. It is going on my favorites of 2008 list. :)

Romantic Times enjoyed it too -- they gave it 4.5 stars and voted it a TOP PICK! Yay!

"Warren surpasses every expectation in this installment of her Noble Legacy Series. Her use of the story-within-a-story technique will have readers eagerly anticipating each new chapter. The characters are gritty, down to earth and downright dangerous. Warren crafts a journey that’s worth our time and investment many times over."
