By The Decades Reading Challenge

Michele (3M) is hosting a By The Decades reading challenge for 2008. I didn't participate in the 2007 challenge, but I was hoping that there'd be another opportunity this upcoming year. The rules are :
1. Read a minimum of 8 books in 8 consecutive decades in ‘08.
2. Books published in the 2000’s do not count.
3. Titles may be cross-posted with any other challenge.
4. You may change your list at any time.
For more details visit her site at

My list is not final but here is what I have so far:
1880s - Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
1890s - The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
1900- "A Room With a View" by E. M. Forster
1910 - Kilmeny of the Orchard by L. M. Montgomery
1920 - This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald
1930 - The Hobbit by J. R. Tolkien
1940 - "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith
1950 - Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
1960 - The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
1970 - The Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty

I will take suggestions for a while if anyone has recommendations for me.

Your mother was exactly right to read to you. My own daughter was read to and began reading on her own before age three. She never attended any formal school until college and she still reads constantly. She graduated number one in her college class.

I have many websites on the benefits for young people to read and you are a great example.

by the way, too bad, but most of my books in print were after 2000, but you are welcome to look at them anyway.
