Book Description:
En route to college in the summer of 1975, sensible seventeen-year-old Amy gets stuck in smalltown Colorado when the 1958 Pontiac Bonneville Sports Coupe driven by her insufferable tiara-toting mom, Francie—former Queen of the Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, Corn Festival—surrenders to a mortally wounded transmission.
It doesn’t take long to realize that thirty-three-year-old Francie is out of money and in no hurry to let go of her daughter, so the two unpack indefinitely. Amy finds work at a funeral home, a place where her unlikely Christian faith can work itself out among the town’s young and old, geeks and jocks, hippies and clergy alike.
Trying not to judge her mom’s serial boyfriend escapades, Amy ends up in a tragic love triangle herself which gives both mother and daughter the chance to do some real growing up. But in a surprise twist, their road to healing still has many miles to go in 2008 as they travel back to Sleepy Eye in that old ’58 coupe.

My Review: I was not sure what to think of this book which is why I have not posted a review yet. I know I liked it... It is not your typical Christian book at all. It is what some might say edgy. Amy is a Christian but she still makes mistakes like we all do. One of them is in detail. It does take place in the 70s and present day. I just wanted to pop her mother for not taking better care of her and putting her male relationships first. There are several characters with stories within the book but it all functions together good. Amy makes a few friends while in the small town of Cordial, Colorado. Among them are the lady funeral director, a local boy wanting to fit in better, and a few people in the hippie commune. This is a story of a girl growing up while facing challenges including a self obsessed mother who sleeps around. There are a few surprises especially towards the end of the book. I do recommend this book with caution. It is an original story. I will definitely buy a final copy when it is released in September 2008. I recommend you do too. :)
