  • Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (May 6, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0764211959

Jake Knew Something Was Wrong.

A relaxing day of rock climbing takes a disturbing turn when Kayden McKenna's route brings her face-to-face with a dead climber. Is it a terrible accident or something darker? When the case is handed to overburdened sheriff Landon Grainger, he turns to Jake Westin for help. With Jake's past now revealed, he's ready to use his talent for investigation again--but he could never prepare for where the mystery will take him.

Kayden's climbing expertise soon leads her and Jake to the realization that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is onto them. When strange things begin happening in Yancey, Jake is terrified that once again his world may put someone he loves in danger. But the truth is far worse than he could ever imagine.

 My Review:

This was a great Christian romantic suspense book. It held my attention all the way to the end. It is book four in the series but can stand alone. I have enjoyed reading all the books in the series.  The McKenna family is present in all the books but the main plots are different. This book focuses on Kayden McKenna and Jake Westin. Kayden had no use for him until it came out he was a different person and his wife and child were killed while he was cop back east. They had sparks before but now she is nice to him and they explode. It surprises the whole family because of Kayden's previous antagonism. This book was full of plot twists and turns. The characters and plot were well developed and interesting. The ending was satisfying. I look forward to reading Reef McKenna's story next.  Highly Recommended. :)

Until I Found You by Victoria Bylin

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Until I Found You
Bethany House Publishers (May 6, 2014)
by
Victoria Bylin

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A word from the Author:

This may sound crazy, but I was driven to write romance by giant bugs and killer rabbits. I just couldn't take it anymore. My husband and two sons would be camped in front of the television watching a movie about spiders the size of bowling balls, and I'd be wondering when the handsome scientist would get around to kissing the spunky woman with the bug spray. When it didn't happen, I decided to write my own happy endings--without the giant bugs...

Known for her realistic, likable characters and vivid writing, Victoria Bylin writes both western and contemporary inspirational romance. Her books have finaled in the ACFW Carol Awards, the Rita Awards and RT Magazine’s Reviewers’ Choice Awards. She and her husband currently live in Lexington, Kentucky and have two grown sons.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Finding each other was only the beginning . . .

When Kate Darby swerves off a mountain road to avoid hitting a California condor, she ends up trapped in her car, teetering on the edge of a cliff. Terrified, she breathes a prayer that changes her life.

It's Nick Sheridan who comes to Kate's rescue. Nick is handsome and confident, and he seems to develop a habit of rescuing her, but Kate is in town only until her grandmother recuperates from a stroke. She's not planning to get involved with one of the locals.

Nick is a reformed veteran of life in the fast lane, a new Christian, and a travel writer. When he sees a car dangling on the edge of a cliff, the daredevil in him jumps into action. He doesn't expect to be swept off his feet by the car's occupant. He's made a vow--no dating for a year--but keeping that vow is going to be a lot more difficult now that he's met Kate Darby. . . .

  • Series: Return to Sugarcreek (Book 2)
  • Paperback: 256 pages
  • Publisher: Avon Inspire (May 6, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0062204479

New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray captures the beauty, devotion, and warmth of Amish life in this engaging tale of family, commitment, trust, and love set in the beloved community of Sugarcreek.

Christina Kempf has always known that God chose Aden Reese to be her husband. As children, he was there to save her when she fell through the ice, and he’s been by her side ever since. After his parents died in a car accident ten years ago, the Kempfs raised Aden as one of their own, and everyone sees Aden and Christina as brother and sister. But Christina has never given up hope that Aden will one day ask her to be his wife.

Aden always planned to court Christina. But losing his mother and father changed everything—except his love for her. Her parents generously welcomed him into their home and treated him like a son. He can’t betray their kindness by admitting his feelings for the girl who is like a sister . . . yet so much more.

Pressured by her parents to court, Christina begins to accept the attentions of Sugarcreek’s young men, and now, Aden must make a choice. Will he stand by and watch the love of his life slip away? Or will he risk losing the love and trust of the family he holds dear to tell Christina how he truly feels?

My Review:

I enjoyed reading this second book in the Return to Sugarcreek series. It can be read alone although characters repeat. This book had three main plots. The first is the relationship between Christina Kempf and Aden Reese. The second is Judith and Ben from a previous book. They cannot have children so they have been going through the adoption process. The last involves Jana a local Amish food restaurant owner who has been in background of many books. She might be finding love again after being widowed for many years. I felt a little frustrated at times with so many plot lines. I wish more time would have been spent on Christina and Aden. It did not feel like they were the center of the book. Most of the characters and plot lines were well developed. The book held my attention from beginning to end. It was a good Amish romance book. Recommended.

Shelley Shepard Gray lives in southern Ohio and writes full time. A busy wife and mother of two, she spends her days writing and keeping track of her two teenagers. One More Last Chance by Cathleen Armstrong (Review)

  • Series: A Place to Call Home (Book 2)
  • Paperback: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Revell (May 6, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0800722470
Some things never change . . . and some things change you forever.
Sarah Cooley has come home to Last Chance, New Mexico, for one reason--because it doesn't change. After a relationship gone bad with a man who wanted to change everything about her, Sarah is more than ready for the town whose motto may as well be, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Chris Reed, on the other hand, wants nothing more than to spark some change in the little town. As the new owner of the Dip 'n' Dine, he's shaking things up to draw folks from all over the Southwest into his restaurant.

As it turns out, the winds of change are blowing into Last Chance--just not in the ways that Sarah or Chris might expect.

With the same evocative writing and charming characters that won fans for her debut novel, Cathleen Armstrong invites you back to Last Chance for a heartwarming, romantic story of two people navigating the twists and turns of life in a small town.
My Review:
I really enjoyed returning to Last Chance. This is the second book in the series. It can stand alone but the characters are the same. The book focuses more on Sarah and Chris. I loved both of them. The secondary characters are good too. Sarah moves back home because she loves it and had a relationship go bad. She loves how it never changes and especially the diner. Chris bought the diner and is trying to change things up a little but to much opposition from some town members including Sarah. The characters and plot are interesting and well developed. I liked the author's writing and atmosphere created. I recommend the whole series. It is a great small town feel to it. :)

While Love Stirs by Lorna Seilstad (Review)

  • Series: The Gregory Sisters (Book 2)
  • Paperback: 352 pages
  • Publisher: Revell (May 6, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0800721824

After graduating from Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery in 1910, Charlotte Gregory is ready to stir things up. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to travel, lecture, and give cooking demonstrations on the very latest kitchen revolution--the gas stove--and certainly doesn't mind that the gas company has hired the handsome Lewis Mathis to perform at her lectures. Lewis encourages her work, especially her crusade to introduce fresh, appetizing, nutritious food to those convalescing in hospitals. But young hospital superintendent Dr. Joel Brooks is not convinced any changes should be made--especially by this outspoken young woman.

When Charlotte and Joel are coerced into planning a fund-raising gala for the hospital, will this combustible pair explode?

Fan favorite Lorna Seilstad is back with a breezy, lighthearted love triangle that will keep readers guessing. Attention to historic detail adorns the timeless story of a young woman looking for true love and making her way in a rapidly changing world.

My Review:

I really enjoyed reading the second book in the Gregory Sisters series. It can stand alone even though the characters are the same. This book focuses on Charlotte Gregory and the sister that was the main character in the first is in the background. Charlotte loves to cook and is good at it. She graduated from the Fannie Farmer cooking school. Her main passion is better food for hospital patients. Her sister has a baby and she is horrified at what they give her to eat so she takes it up with the doctor, Joel Brooks. He is trying to watch the hospital budget.  Sparks fly from the beginning. There is also Lewis though, a sweet singer that goes on the road with her cooking shows. The characters and plot are well developed and interesting. It held my attention from the beginning. It is a great light summer Christian historical romance book. Recommended. :)

Life Support by Candace Calvert (Review)

  • Series: Grace Medical
  • Paperback: 400 pages
  • Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc. (February 21, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-1414361130

Nurse Lauren Barclay put her life on hold to keep a watchful eye on her troubled sister. It’s why she’s back in Houston. But that means confronting the brooding physician assistant who caused painful turmoil in her family—and left Lauren with memories her heart can’t forget.

PA and single parent Elijah Landry is no stranger to stormy relationships, including one with his father, who is threatening him with a restraining order. It won’t stop Eli from protecting his disabled brother—or from making peace with Lauren. He wants that and so much more.

But as Lauren and Eli draw closer, a powerful hurricane roars toward Houston. Survival instincts take priority and everything changes. Can hope weather the storm?

 My Review:

This is the latest installment in the Grace Medical series. It can stand alone. This book focuses on Lauren Barclay. She is a nurse and has to move back to Houston to take care of her little sister. Her sister has several issues possibly drugs and mental illness. No story is complete without a love interest and Mr. Elijah Landry is it for Lauren. The characters and plot are interesting and unique. The secondary characters were great too. He has a brother that has a TBI and has been in and out of the hospital. Elijah already knew Lauren's sister and Lauren has several misconceptions about the relationship. So she has trust issues with him. They both have family drama galore. Added to it all is a hurricane that is about to hit the area. This was good romantic medical drama.

Fatal Exchange by Lisa Harris (Review)

  • Series: Southern Crimes (Book 2)
  • Paperback: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Revell (May 6, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0800721916

Emily Hunt might come from a family of cops, but she never goes looking for an adrenaline rush. She lives the quiet--well, relatively quiet--life of a teacher and thrives on making a difference in the lives of her students. But she'll have to draw on a well of strength and savvy she didn't know she had as student Rafael Cerda takes her class hostage for ransom money to save his brother's life.

Undercover cop Mason Taylor has been working with Rafael to find his brother and bring the cartel thugs who hold him to justice. Can he talk Rafael down from his impulsive actions? And is there something more sinister at work here than he realizes?

Fatal Exchange
draws readers into a complex matrix of intertwining lives and unraveling secrets, where every answer creates more questions. Romantic suspense fans will hardly want to come up for air.

My Review:

I thought this was an okay romantic suspense book. It is book two in the Southern Crimes series and the characters are the same. A piece of the plot is followed through the series which is the death of Michael Hunt. The characters and plot are interesting but could use a little more developing. There is a third book coming out that I am interested to read because we find out what really happened to Michael, Emily's brother. I recommend reading the series in order.

He has a good plan especially for your life, and there is nothing you can’t overcome with His help.”

ABOUT THE BOOK

Wynter Evans is a promising young reporter for a television station in St. Louis, but even a bright future doesn't take away her pain over the disappearance of her brother nine years ago. With research for work as her cover, she sets out with one of the station's photogs for the place where the picture was taken: the town of Sanctuary. Almost as soon as she arrives, she meets the town's handsome young mayor, Rueben King, and together they begin to uncover long held secrets that could tear the small town apart and change everything Wynter thought she knew about her life. As the truth of her family's past hides in the shadows, it's clear someone will stop at nothing to keep the answers she's searching for hidden forever--even if the cost is Wynter's very life. Rise and Shine by Sandra Bricker (Review)

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Rise and Shine
River North; New Edition edition (May 1, 2014)
by
Sandra D. Bricker

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

For more than a decade, Sandra D. Bricker lived in Los Angeles. While honing her chosen craft of screenwriting in every spare moment, she worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime television's hottest stars. When her mother became ill in Florida, she walked away from that segment of her life and moved across the country to take on a new role: Caregiver.

The author says that it was her 8th novel that opened the door to finding her way as a writer. "I'm a Christian woman, first and foremost," she says. "So it was a bit of a dream-come-true when Summerside Press chose me as one of two authors to launch the Love Finds You line."

Sandie's real-life role as cancer survivor has parlayed into her steadfast commitment to raising awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research. Spearheading a series of devotionals for Summerside Press (such as the popular His Grace is Sufficient...Decaf is Not), the author has stipulated that a portion of each contributor's proceeds will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

"Being allowed to combine my faith and my humor with raising funds for my pet projects ... and still pursue my writing dream," says Bricker, "well, that's the best of all worlds, as far as I'm concerned!"

And one of the author's pet projects is animal rescue, evidenced by the special bond she has created with one particular formerly-abandoned puppy -- a red-haired collie with "killer brown eyes and the heart of the class clown."

ABOUT THE BOOK

Shannon Malone thought she'd found her happy ending when she married Edmund Ridgeway, but a diving accident on their honeymoon left her in a coma. Waking up to the news that she's thirty years old would have been daunting enough . . . but she also learns that Edmund has lost his interim battle with cancer and the world has marched on without her. Her gorgeous doctor, Daniel Petros, seems to know everything about her and becomes Shannon's tour guide into a whole new world of madness where reality television has taken over the planet and everyone's life appears to revolve around a tiny screen on their cell phones! As Shannon struggles to navigate through the changes-both in the world and in her-she also must discern real memories from imagined ones. Did she really ever wear capris pants and entertain in her living room, or was that Laura Petrie from her favorite classic TV show? And where is her beloved dog, Freeway? Oh, wait! That was Jonathan and Jennifer Hart's dog, not hers. Shannon's three elderly aunts flit through her life in true Sleeping Beauty style with her well-being always a priority. And Edmund's sister Millicent descends like the Evil Queen she is, trying to extract Shannon from any claim on the Ridgeway family fortune. When a tornado moves through town and Shannon is knocked unconscious, will Daniel's kiss awaken her once and for all?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Rise and Shine, go HERE.

My Review:

I thought this was a fun at times touching book. I love the relationship that develops between Shannon and Dr. Daniel. Shannon wakes up from a long coma to find the world very changed. We follow her as she adapts to the current world. I love her three elderly slightly eccentric aunts. The characters and plot are well developed and interesting. This is a modern take on the old fairy tale. Recommended. :)

One Perfect Spring by Irene Hannon (Review)

  • Paperback: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Revell (May 6, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0800722678

Claire Summers is a determined, independent single mother who is doing her best to make lemonade out of the lemons life has handed her. Keith Watson is a results-oriented workaholic with no time for a social life. As the executive assistant to a local philanthropic businessman, he's used to fielding requests for donations. But when a letter from Claire's eleven-year-old daughter reaches his desk, everything changes. The girl isn't asking for money, but for help finding the long-lost son of an elderly neighbor.

As Keith digs reluctantly into this complicated assignment, he has no idea how intertwined his life and Claire's will become--nor how one little girl's kindhearted request will touch so many lives and reap so many blessings.

Through compelling characters and surprising plot twists, Irene Hannon offers readers this tenderhearted story of family connections that demonstrates how life is like lilacs--the biggest blooms often come only after the harshest winters.

 My Review:

This was a great Christian contemporary romance book. It was perfect just like the title One Perfect Spring. I really enjoyed reading it from start to finish. The characters and plot were well developed, interesting, and unique. I loved the relationship of Claire and Keith that evolved. They each have past issues they have to deal with before they can be together. Claire has an ex husband and is a single mother. Keith was adopted at three and has bad memories. Claire's daughter is sweet and overhears the story of the  next door neighbor Dr. Chandler's giving up her child for adoption over 20 years ago and how much she wants to find him so she writes a letter to Keith asking for help. Keith does not want to tackle the project at first but his boss makes him. Then his boss meets Dr. Chandler and it is love at first sight but he has relationship issues with his daughter he's working on too. This was a book with multiple point of views at times. It worked fine to me. The ending is heart rending but fits the book. If you cry easy you might need tissues. Highly recommended. :)

Irene Hannon is the bestselling author of over forty books, including That Certain Summer and more than two dozen other contemporary romance novels. Her romance fiction has won a coveted RITA Award from Romance Writers of America, a Carol Award, a HOLT Medallion, and an RT Reviewers' Choice Award from RT Book Reviews magazine. Death by the Book by Julianna Deering (Review)

  • Series: A Drew Farthering Mystery
  • Paperback: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (March 4, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-0764210969

Drew Farthering wanted nothing more than to end the summer of 1932 with the announcement of his engagement. Instead, he finds himself caught up in another mysterious case when the family solicitor is found murdered, an antique hatpin with a cryptic message, Advice to Jack, piercing his chest.

Evidence of secret meetings and a young girl's tearful confession point to the victim's double life, but what does the solicitor's murder have to do with the murder of a physician on the local golf course? Nothing, it would seem--except for another puzzling note, affixed with a similar-looking bloodied hatpin.

Soon the police make an arrest in connection with the murders, but Drew isn't at all certain they have the right suspect in custody. And why does his investigation seem to be drawing him closer and closer to home?

 My Review:

I thought this was a good second Drew Fartherling mystery book. It is a series so I recommend reading the first book too for background on the characters as they are the same. The mystery plots are not connected. I really enjoyed the English aspect of the book. It is set in England in the early 1930s. Drew Fartherling is the main character and has a habit of stumbling upon murder cases. He does not really have a full time job since he comes from money so he has extra time on his hands. The local police chief is not always happy to have his help although he is good at it. There are other great characters too including his best friend Nick, girlfriend Madeline, and her aunt Ruth from the USA. The author does a good job developing characters and the mystery plot. It kept my attention from beginning to end. The plot and characters are interesting and unique. Drew's Christian faith is woven into the book perfectly. This was a good cozy Christian mystery book. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Recommended.

Critical Condition by Richard Mabry, M.D. (Review)

  • Paperback: 336 pages
  • Publisher: Thomas Nelson (April 15, 2014)
  • ISBN-13: 978-1401687403

IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A QUIET DINNER PARTY WITH HER COLLEAGUES—
NOT THE SCENE OF A MURDER.
But the murder of a stranger on her front lawn is only the first in a string of events that have Dr. Shannon Frasier’s life teetering on the edge of chaos. She’s unable to make the deeper commitment her boyfriend deserves. Her sister shows up at her home needing a place to stay but with no promise she’ll remain sober. And her father is diagnosed with cancer.

Then Shannon’s life stops teetering and plunges into the abyss. Because the person behind the guttural voice on the phone wants to know what the stranger said before he died. And he won’t stop until Shannon gives him the information he wants—even if she doesn’t have it.

He’s coming for her. She’s not sure the police on the case can be trusted. And her only hope of escape—for herself and for those she loves—is to overcome her buried past.

 My Review:

I thought this was an okay Christian medical drama fiction book. The characters and plot were interesting and kept my attention. Dr. Shannon Frasier lost her soon to be fiance when she was still in medical school when he was shot in front of her. Years later as an established doctor a man is shot on her front lawn. The two cases are not criminally connected but still affect her psychologically. Her sister calls out of the blue and says she needs a place to stay and turns out she has a past drug alcohol issues. There are several sides to the main plot. On top of the murder and family issues she has to deal with a detective that might like her more than usual. She has a serious boyfriend who wants to be more and is a fellow doctor. I thought this detracted from the story instead of adding to it. It felt like it was just too much for one book. So overall I enjoyed reading it and I like this author's works. Recommended to fans of this genre.
